Het is in de VS geclassificeerd als een gereguleerde stof van categorie II vanwege het hoge risico op misbruik en afhankelijkheid. Amfetaminen zijn stimulerende middelen voor het centrale zenuwstelsel (CZS) die de dopamine- en noradrenalinespiegels in de hersenen verhogen.<\/p>\n<h3>Medische Toepassingen<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Belangrijkste door de FDA goedgekeurde toepassingen<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Behandeling van\u00a0<strong>Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)<\/strong>\u00a0bij kinderen (vanaf 3 jaar), adolescenten en volwassenen.<\/li>\n<li>Behandeling van\u00a0<strong>narcolepsie<\/strong>\u00a0(een slaapstoornis die overmatige slaperigheid overdag veroorzaakt).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Het werkt door de concentratie, aandacht en impulscontrole te verbeteren en hyperactiviteit te verminderen. De effecten houden doorgaans 4 tot 12 uur aan, afhankelijk van de formulering (directe afgifte of verlengde afgifte zoals Adderall XR).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-2 last:mb-0\"><strong>Bewijs<\/strong>Klinische onderzoeken (bijv. de MTA-studie, 1999) tonen aan dat Adderall de ADHD-symptomen bij ongeveer 70-80% van de pati\u00ebnten verbetert, en daarmee beter presteert dan een placebo. Langetermijnstudies (bijv. vervolgonderzoeken van het NIMH) bevestigen dat de voordelen bij correct gebruik aanhouden.<\/p>\n<h3>Hoe het werkt (mechanisme)<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-2 last:mb-0\">Amfetaminen zoals die in Adderall:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Blokkeer de heropname van dopamine en noradrenaline.<\/li>\n<li>Bevorder hun vrijlating uit de neuronen.<\/li>\n<li>Rem monoamineoxidase (MAO) en verleng zo de activiteit van neurotransmitters.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"mb-2 last:mb-0\">Dit leidt tot verhoogde alertheid en motivatie. Gegevens van de CDC tonen aan dat er in 2021 ongeveer 16.000 sterfgevallen door overdoses met stimulerende middelen in de VS waren, waarvan vele bij niet-medisch gebruik.<\/p>\n<h3>Niet-medisch gebruik (recreatief gebruik)<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-2 last:mb-0\">Wordt vaak misbruikt als 'studiedrug', voor euforie of om af te vallen. Straatnamen: Addy, speed.
